Personal Health Record
demonstrates ability to communicate with
health plans and care providers
FORT WAYNE, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- 4/05/07
Most patients visiting a physician’s office
are immediately confronted with a clipboard
full of blank medical forms and a request
for an insurance card. While the patient
labors to complete the forms, the physician
office staff copies the insurance card and
makes contact with the health plan to confirm
eligibility and determine deductible and
co-pay amounts.
NoMoreClipboard.com, an online Personal
Health Record (PHR), is working with healthcare
providers and industry groups to simplify
these transactions and save the patient
and the medical practice significant time
and effort.
CAQH, a nonprofit alliance of leading health
plans, networks and trade associations,
has developed standard business rules for
information exchange that enable providers
to electronically access health insurance
eligibility and benefit information in a
matter of seconds. These rules are now being
put into practice by NoMoreClipboard.com,
arming patients with real-time insurance
benefits and helping them communicate with
physicians.
At the HIT Summit, a gathering of healthcare
IT professionals held last week in Washington,
D.C., CAQH consultant Rachel Foerster presented
the status of CAQH Committee on Operating
Rules for Information Exchange (CORE) efforts.
“I’m here to tell you it’s been done in
the real world – in a real world environment,”
stated Foerster. “I’m beside myself in being
able to talk about this – this is actually
happening.”
Foerster then shared screen shots of the
NoMoreClipboard.com application generating
these transactions at the recent HIMSS07
Interoperability Showcase. Staged as part
of the recent 2007 Annual Healthcare Information
and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Conference
& Exhibition in New Orleans, the Showcase
depicts realistic clinical scenarios enabled
by the standards-based Integrating the Healthcare
Enterprise (IHE) framework.
During the Showcase, NoMoreClipboard.com
demonstrated its ability to query health
plans for eligibility and benefit information.
The electronic responses from the health
plans populated the PHR, and were also sent
securely to an electronic medical record
(EMR) used by physician practices to manage
patient medical records.
“While these kinds of electronic transactions
are routine in industries like banking,
healthcare communication is still largely
paper-based and labor intensive,” said Jeff
Donnell, NoMoreClipboard.com vice president
of marketing. “Thanks to organizations like
CAQH and IHE, we are breaking new ground
and empowering patients.”
“As the first PHR to incorporate the CORE
standards, we have the opportunity to simplify
healthcare for patients and physician offices,”
stated Donnell. “Now, a patient can go to
NoMoreClipboard.com and create a complete
medical history from home. This online record
will contain their insurance information,
along with medications, allergies, past
illnesses and other important medical information.
Prior to an appointment, the patient sends
this record to the doctor’s office right
from the application. As part of that transaction,
we can query the health plan to verify coverage
and get information about eligibility and
benefits. When the patient arrives for the
appointment, the medical office already
has their filled out forms and knows the
status of insurance coverage. The patient
and the practice save valuable time.”
