NoMoreClipboard to Lead $1.25 Million ONC Grant

Grant will improve the ability of an individual to access and manage their healthcare information.

Fort Wayne, Ind. — February 14, 2011 — NoMoreClipboard (NMC), one of the leading Personal Health Record vendors in the US, will serve as the prime contractor for an ONC Challenge Grant recently given to Indiana Health Information Technology, Inc. (IHIT). Funding was awarded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services. The grant is part of a federal program designed to foster innovation, and will focus on improving consumer access to healthcare information.

NoMoreClipboard worked with IHIT to author the grant application, emphasizing its unique qualifications to connect consumers with health information exchanges. NMC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medical Informatics Engineering (MIE), an Indiana company that developed and operates Med-Web - one of the first health information exchanges in the country.

“Our Personal Health Record systems were built by a company that really understands how medical information is used and exchanged,” explained NMC president Jeff Donnell. “We provide services today throughout the US and in 18 countries around the world. This ONC grant will allow us to partner with several HIE’s, hospitals and clinics to improve how data is accessed and shared. We want to make it easy for people to be able to locate and manage healthcare information for their personal healthcare records, either for themselves, or for family members. Our goal is to make individual access to healthcare information easy, secure and cost effective.”

The project will span sixteen months and will focus on three specific areas - data portability, or liquidity, patient identification and authentication, and secure messaging. NMC will help develop standards-based policies and solutions that will be piloted by providers in both urban and rural areas throughout the state, representing a wide variety of patients. Clinical support and project measurement will be provided by the Parkview Research Center, under the guidance of Medical Director, Michael Mirro, MD, who is also chair of the IT committee for the American College of Cardiology.

A National Model

“Eight states received ONC Challenge Grant funding. Indiana was one of only two states to receive multiple grant awards,” said Andrew VanZee, Statewide Health IT Director and CEO of IHIT, Inc. “Indiana has already shown advanced success in connecting physicians, hospitals and pharmacies compared to other regions in the U.S. This award allows us to expand upon these efforts by involving consumers in the electronic exchange of health information and helping them take a more active role in managing their health. We are going to work with NoMoreClipboard and Indiana HIEs, medical professionals and patients to develop a model that can be used around the country.”

“Too often, patients are excluded as active participants in the process,” added Donnell. “We commend the ONC for recognizing how important it is to engage patients and help provide them the tools necessary to be able to more easily manage their personal health information. We are honored to be selected to lead this important initiative that will help improve access to healthcare information and lower costs.”
